Paris Motor Show: 90 exciting editions

126 years of the Mondial de l'Auto in 2024

It all began when the automobile had only just been invented. The Exposition Internationale d’Automobiles, held at the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris in 1898, was the very first event in the world devoted to this new mode of transport. A showcase for manufacturers and a meeting place for enthusiasts, the Mondial de l’Auto has established itself as a privileged witness to the transport industry. So let’s take a step back in time and travel together through more than a hundred years of motoring history.

1898

The very first Paris Motor Show in the world was the Exposition Internationale d’Automobiles at the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris. To take part in the event, cars had to successfully complete a 23-kilometre round trip from Paris to Versailles to demonstrate their reliability. Electric cars were already on show alongside internal combustion engines

1904

Peugeot presents the Type 69, a small city car

1912

In the midst of Talbot, Panhard & Levassor, Delahaye and De Dion-Bouton, Peugeot’s Type BP1, nicknamed Bébé because of its compact dimensions and designed by Ettore Bugatti, is unveiled

1921

Citroën presents the 5CV

1926

The exhibition becomes the Salon de l’Automobile, du Cycle et des Sports

1936

The Peugeot 302, the Fiat 500 Topolino and the Panhard Dynamic were the stars of the show

1946

The Panhard Dyna and Renault 4CV amaze the public

1953

The Ferrari 250 Europa and the Inter Autoscooter are presented to the public for the first time

1955

The new Citroën DS 19 and its renowned hydropneumatic suspension are unveiled. The Continental Mark II, a symbol of American luxury, and the Peugeot 403, the first mass-produced French car with a diesel engine, are also presented

1957

Presentation of the first Japanese car here: the Prince Skyline

1959

The 250 GT Berlinetta SWB and the 250 GT Cabriolet Pinin Farina Series II made their first appearance on the Ferrari stand at the show

1962

The show moves to the Porte de Versailles and the Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Lusso and the Buick Riviera are presented for the first time

1964

The new Renault R8 Gordini, Rover 2000, Chrysler Barracuda, Citroën DS-Pallas and Ami 6 station wagon take centre stage

1968

World premiere for the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona

1972

Launch of the Ferrari 365 GT4 2+2

1974

Citroën presents the CX, Fiat the 131 and Volkswagen the Golf

1976

World premiere for the Ferrari 512 BB and the 400, and presentation of the latest Ford Fiesta, Citroën LN and Audi 100

1980

The Renault Eve and Peugeot Vera concept cars inspire the future of motoring

1984

The Peugeot Quasar Citroën Eco 2000 concept amazed visitors, as did the new Ferrari Testarossa, the R25 Turbo, the Renault Espace, the Citroën Visa and CX 25 GTI Turbo, and the Peugeot 205 XT

1988

The Salon de l’Automobile becomes the Mondial de l’Automobile and presents the Renault 19, Opel Vectra, Volvo 400, Ford Sierra Cosworth, Volkswagen Corrado and Citroën AX Diesel

1992

Renault Twingo makes its first public appearance

1996

The Peugeot 406 Coupé, the Renault Scénic, the Renault Espace III and the Citroën Berlingo

2000

Ferrari presents the 550 Barchetta for the first time, Renault the Clio V6 as well as the Laguna II, Citroën the C5

2004

The Ferrari F430 is revealed to the general public, as are the Citroën C4, the Renault Modus and the Peugeot 1007

2008

Ferrari launches the California, Citroën the C3 Picasso, Peugeot the 3008, Renault the Mégane III and Laguna Coupé, Mercedes the Fascination, Chevrolet the Cruze, Kia the Soul, Alfa Romeo the Mito, Infiniti the 37 Cabriolet, Chevrolet the Volt, Abarth the 595 EsseEsse

2012

The Renault Clio IV and R.S version, Jaguar F-Type, Volkswagen Golf 7 GTI, Opel Adam, Seat Leon, Skoda Rapid, Mini Paceman, the new Range Rover, Lexus LF-CC, Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake, Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo are all on show at the Mondial de l’Auto

2016

Concept cars include the Renault TreZor, Volkswagen ID Concept, BMW X2 Concept, Lexus UX Concept and Mercedes Generation EQ, while production cars include Ferrari’s new GTC4Lusso T, Citroën’s C3 III, Renault’s Grand Scénic and Peugeot’s 3008 II and 5008 II

2022

That year, we admired the Alpine Alpenglow, A110R and A110 E-ternity, Renault 5 Turbo 3E and 4EVER Trophy, Renault Austral, Peugeot 408, NamX HUV, Hopium Machina Vision, Dacia Manifesto, Jeep Avenger, DS 3 and DS 7, BYD Tang EV, Han EV, Song Plus EV, Atto 3 and Seal, VinFast VF6 and VF7, Ora Funky Cat and Next Ora Concept, Wey Coffee 01 and 02, Microlino, Aixam Mega eScouty, Silence S04, Vilebrequin 1000tipla, Pagani Huayra BC Roadster, McLaren Senna LM, Mugello de Devalliet, Genty Akylone, KGM ERC140, Pantore Vakog, Beltoise BT01, Raffer TB02, Porsche Carrera GT, McLaren-Mercedes SLR, Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series, Ferrari 296 GTB, SF90 Stradale, 812 GTS, Monza SP2 among nearly 15 other Ferraris united for a good cause

1901

The event moved to the Grand Palais in Paris and was renamed the International Automobile, Cycle and Sports Exhibition. Dion-Bouton, Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot and Renault were already among the main exhibitors

1908

Ford presents the Ford T, the first popular car in history

1919

Presentation of the very luxurious Hispano-Suiza H6 and the first mass-produced French car, the Citroën Type A

1922

On the opening day of the Paris Motor Show, an aeroplane draws the name Citroën, almost 5 kilometres long, across the skies over Paris

1932

Renault unveils the Mona 4, Peugeot the 301 and Citroën the Rosalie, while Bugatti exhibits the fabulous Type 57

1937

Presentation of the new Renault Juvaquatre

1948

Citroën presents the famous 2CV, Peugeot its new 203

1954

World premiere for the Facel Vega FV and the Ferrari 250 Europa GT

1956

The Renault Dauphine and the Lloyd Alexander TS attracted a lot of attention at the show

1958

The Simca Aronde Monaco B60, the Austin A 40 Sprite and the Vespa 400 are unveiled

1960

The Panhard PL 17 Cabriolet, the Peugeot 404 estate and the Opel Rekord P2 are presented to the public for the first time

1963

French premiere of the Porsche 901, better known as the Porsche 911

1967

The Citroën Dyane is unveiled

1971

Pininfarina unveils the Riviera concept, based on the design of the 504 Coupé as a shooting brake

1973

Ferrari unveils the new 365 GT4 BB

1975

The Ferrari 308 GTB is unveiled at the Salon de l’Auto

1978

The Lancia Beta coupé, Lada Niva, Fiat Ritmo and Citroën Visa attract the public

1982

Citroën presents the BX, Ford the Sierra, Renault the R5 Turbo 2 and Peugeot the 505 Turbo

1986

The new Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9L, Audi 80 Quattro, BMW 7 Series E32, Citroën CX, Cadillac Allanté and Nissan Sunny Opel Omega were the stars of the show

1990

Renault presents the Laguna concept

1994

The Venturi Atlantique 300 and the Renault Espace F1 prototype were unveiled at this event

1998

The 100th anniversary! In addition to the « Parade of the Century » on the Champs Elysées, the Mondial de l’Auto showcased the new Peugeot 206, Toyoya Yaris and Volkswagen Lupo city cars, as well as much-loved MPVs such as the Citroën Xsara Picasso, Opel Zafira and Fiat Multipla

2002

Visitors were able to admire the new Renault Mégane II and the Citroën C3 Pluriel

2006

The Audi R8 and Citroën C4 Picasso are presented at the show

2010

The Ferrari 599 SA Aperta, the DS4, the Peugeot 508, the Renault Latitude, the Citroën C4 and Lacoste, the Audi Quattro Concept, the BMW 6 Series Coupé Concept, the Chevrolet Cruze 5-door Concept, the Jaguar C-X75 Concept, the Kia Concept POP, the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento and the Lotus Elan all make their debut at the show
